The Submariner 5512, produced from 1959 to approximately 1980, is a key reference that introduced design elements like the 40mm case and crown guards to the Submariner line, which continue to this day.

A major difference between the 5512 and its sibling, the 5513, is the 5512's chronometer-certified movement, which results in a four-line dial text compared to the two-line 5513.

The "Maxi" variants have larger hour markers and lume plots, a feature that has been applied to various iterations over its production life.
